On Saturday 18th June I taught a masterclass at the Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno, it was planned to coincide with my exhibition in the newly expanded gallery shop- ‘In the Window’ which runs from 21/05/2016- until 14/08/2016.
I demonstrated the sgraffito technique which can be used with many different materials- and means to scratch through one layer to another underneath to create patterns or tone. In glass, you black out the glass and then use various nibs, brushes and sharpened sticks to take off the paint by scratching, stippling and scrumbling.
The people who attended were a real mix – from working artists through to beginners, they all work so hard and really pushed themselves- the results were fantastic. For example, one lady was so scared to actually draw, convinced she couldn’t create her own design- only wanting to trace. However, we encouraged her to and she did so with real success. She was so pleased with herself and her final painting afterwards- a real achievement.
Everybody firstly created designs using collage and drawing techniques, which were transferred onto glass after first playing with the technique to see what could be achieved. Each person painted a light-catcher and also a framed piece of glass.
As you can see the pieces are highly individual and the participants all embraced the new technique.
It was a pleasure to be involved with the event, and I hope to run further workshops at the Mostyn soon. I thank them for their continued support.
